Distribution Transformers FAQ – WDP Transvolt Pretoria
Frequently Asked Questions – Distribution Transformers (16 kVA – 3000 kVA)
WDP Transvolt | Pretoria, Gauteng | Nationwide Delivery & Repairs
What is a distribution transformer and how does it work?
A distribution transformer steps down high-voltage electricity (11 kV, 22 kV, or 33 kV) from the grid to usable low-voltage levels (400V/230V) for homes, factories, and businesses. It uses electromagnetic induction between primary and secondary windings inside an oil-filled or dry-type tank. WDP Transvolt supplies oil-immersed ONAN-cooled transformers compliant with SANS 780 and IEC 60076.
What kVA rating do I need for my application?
Use this quick guide (based on 0.8 power factor):
- 16–25 kVA: Small shops, homes, rural pumps
- 50–100 kVA: Small factories, schools, clinics
- 200–500 kVA: Medium factories, office parks, mini-subs
- 630–1000 kVA: Large malls, hospitals, industrial estates
- 1250–3000 kVA: Mines, data centers, municipal substations

Are your transformers new or refurbished?
Both! We stock brand-new units and expertly refurbished transformers in our Pretoria workshop. Refurbished units include new gaskets, bushings, and silica gel, full oil regeneration & DGA testing, insulation resistance, turns ratio, and tan delta tests, and a 10-year warranty on all reconditioned units.
Do you offer transformer repairs in Gauteng?
Yes! WDP Transvolt specializes in minor and major transformer repairs in Pretoria: winding faults & short circuits, oil leaks, bushing replacement, core & clamp refurbishment, oil filtration, dehydration, and regeneration, and 24/7 emergency call-out in Gauteng.
What standards do your transformers meet?
All units comply with SANS 780 (South African National Standard), IEC 60076 (International), NRS 052 (Eskom specifications), and ISO 9001 certified workshop processes. Full test certificates provided.
Can you deliver and install nationwide?
Yes! We offer turnkey delivery and installation across South Africa: crane hire & offloading, cable termination & earthing, commissioning & load testing, and mini-substation integration. Popular destinations: Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein, Polokwane.
What is the difference between pole-mounted and ground-mounted transformers?
| Pole-Mounted | Ground-Mounted |
| kVA Range | 16–200 kVA | 315–3000 kVA |
| Installation | On wooden/concrete poles | On plinth or skid |
| Space | Minimal footprint | Requires substation area |
| Cost | Lower | Higher (includes enclosure) |
How long does refurbishment take?
Standard turnaround in Pretoria: Minor repair (oil top-up, bushing): 1–3 days. Major refurb (winding, core): 2–4 weeks. Emergency 48-hour service available.
Do you test transformer oil?
Yes! We perform full oil analysis in-house or via SANAS labs: dielectric breakdown (BDV), moisture content (PPM), acidity & sludge, dissolved gas analysis (DGA), and furan & inhibitor levels. Free oil sampling with every purchase or repair.
What cooling methods do you use?
ONAN (Oil Natural Air Natural) is standard for all units up to 3000 kVA. Optional: ONAF (forced air) for 1000 kVA+, KNAN (ester fluid) for fire-safe areas.
Can I rent a transformer?
Yes! Short-term transformer rental available in Gauteng: 16 kVA – 1000 kVA, daily, weekly, monthly rates, includes delivery & commissioning. Ideal for construction sites, events, or emergency backup.
What is a mini-substation?
A mini-sub combines an HV ring main unit (RMU), distribution transformer, and LV panel in one enclosure. We supply 11 kV / 400V packages, 200–1000 kVA standard, indoor & outdoor versions, and full SANS 1029 compliance.
Do you offer on-load tap changers (OLTC)?
Yes, OLTC available on 500 kVA and above for voltage regulation under load. Manual tap changers standard on all units (±2.5%, ±5%).
What accessories are included?
Standard fittings: HV/LV bushings, conservator & silica gel breather, oil level gauge, earthing terminals, and lifting lugs & skid base. Optional: Buchholz relay, WTI/OTI, pressure relief device, lightning arrestors.
How energy-efficient are your transformers?
All units exceed SANS 780 efficiency levels: no-load loss ≤ 0.3%, load loss ≤ 1.0% at full load, and efficiency > 98.5% at 50% load. Reduces electricity costs and carbon footprint.
Do you service Eskom or municipal transformers?
Yes! We are approved contractors for preventive maintenance, oil regeneration on-site, fault diagnosis & reporting, and retrofitting old units.
What is the warranty period?
New transformers: 2 years. Refurbished transformers: 10 years (with maintenance contract).
Can I get a quote online?
Yes! Use our online quote form or WhatsApp 082 567 8901. Same-day response.
